Stop using a laptop after a liquid spill. Turn it off and disconnect external power only where safe, then follow the model’s manufacturer guidance and arrange assessment before trying to prove that it still works.
Put immediate safety before testing
Keep people away from an electrical hazard. Do not handle wet plugs or exposed electrical parts. If there is smoke, fire or another immediate danger, prioritise personal safety and appropriate emergency assistance.
For an ordinary spill without an active hazard, the aim is to stop unnecessary operation. Lenovo’s model guidance advises prompt shutdown and careful disconnection of power. Follow the instructions for the actual device; battery access and drainage design differ between models.
Avoid improvised drying and repeated power-on attempts
Do not use an oven, hair dryer or other heat source, and do not dismantle the device unless you are qualified and authorised. Avoid shaking or turning it over based on a generic tip: some models have specific drainage arrangements and handling instructions.
A dry-looking exterior does not establish that the inside is safe or undamaged. Repeatedly reconnecting power to check the screen can undermine the assessment. Describe what happened and seek advice before resuming use.
Prepare the incident record
- Device model and whether it belongs to you or an organisation.
- What liquid was involved and the approximate time.
- Where it reached the device, without opening it to investigate.
- Whether the computer was operating or charging.
- Actions already taken and any subsequent power-on attempts.
- Whether important files exist only on this device.
Keep repair and data priorities separate
If the files are critical, say so before authorising repair, storage replacement or a reinstall. Restoring the laptop’s operation and preserving its data can require different decisions. The assessor needs to understand which outcome takes priority.
Do not attempt a forced backup through an unstable or potentially unsafe device merely because a generic checklist says to copy files first. Ask for an appropriate assessment route. No initial symptom can guarantee repairability or successful recovery.
Agree the next step before transport
| Decision | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Assessment | Handling route, scope and any assessment charge. |
| Authority | Who may approve work and data access. |
| Transport | The safe, serviceable handover arrangement. |
| Quotation | Findings, proposed action, parts and price. |
| Return | The agreed function and data checks. |
Foxbyte does not imply an unverified walk-in location or immediate repair slot. Describe the incident first and confirm the arrangement directly before sending equipment.
