A CCTV picture is not proof that useful footage was recorded

A live CCTV image proves only that a view is available at that moment. A useful recording check must show that the right camera’s footage can be found, played and exported by an authorised person.

Plan a harmless test event

Choose an ordinary, authorised event that can be located later without staging a security incident. Note the camera, date, approximate time and expected scene. Keep the test proportionate and avoid unnecessarily recording people or sensitive activity.

Agree who performs the check and which system is in scope. A routine playback exercise should not involve deleting footage, changing retention or interrupting recording without authority.

Follow the recording path

• Identify the correct camera by its actual location and name.
• Check the recorder’s date, time and timezone.
• Locate the selected period in playback.
• Confirm the scene contains the useful detail expected from that view.
• Export a representative clip through the supported authorised method.
• Open the export in the agreed viewer or recipient environment.

Investigate gaps without guessing

Missing footage may relate to recording configuration, storage, power, connectivity or another system condition. Preserve the observation and have the responsible technician investigate. Do not assume a larger drive will resolve every recording problem.

A clip that opens may still lack the detail needed for the original purpose. If the view was intended to show an entrance clearly but lighting or obstruction prevents that, review the design and acceptance requirement. File availability and useful evidence are separate questions.

Repeat when the system changes

Adding a camera, changing recording settings, replacing a drive or altering remote access can affect the result. Include an appropriate playback check in the change and maintenance process. Keep the record with the system handover information.

For a real incident, follow the organisation’s authorised evidence-handling and disclosure process. Routine testing does not establish forensic capability or a universal legal standard for footage. Its value is early discovery of practical recording and access problems.
